On Monday, the madras high court, has acquitted B. Chinnaswamy, father of C. Kausalya and ordered his release, and also commuted the death sentence of 5 assailants to life imprisonment. Justices M. Sathyanarayanan and M. Nirmal kumar also ordered to return his fine amount, if any paid by him. They also confirmed the acquittal of his wife C. Annalakshmi and her brother P. Pandithurai from the sensational 2016 Udumalpet murder case.

Mr. B Chinnaswamy, had been accused of hiring contract killers to kill engineering student V. Shankar after the latter married the former’s daughter Kausalya. It has been reported that Chinnathambi who belongs to OBC community disliked his daughter marrying Shankar, a youth from Scheduled caste. The brutal murder shook the state and was termed as of the most horrific caste killings. Initially, the trial court awarded the death sentence to six, life to one and five years of imprisonment to one more accused in the case.

While all the convicts had come on appeal to the High court, the state too appealed against the acquittal of three more accused including Ms Annalakshmi, Mr. Pandidurai and one of the hitmen Prasanna. The division bench which was led by Justice Sathyanarayanan dismissed the state appeal and allowed the appeal preferred by Mr.Chinnaswamy on the ground that neither the charge of criminal conspiracy nor that of murder stood proved against him.

This decision from the high court shocked people across the state. Along with MNM leader Kamal Haasan, filmmaker Pa Ranjith, many people raised question against the court’s verdict. “If those 5 accused are found guilty of murder and sentenced life imprisonment and the parents are innocent, for which cause they killed Shankar ?” asked one of a twitter user whereas director Pa. Ranjith trolled the verdict through his tweets.

“In a case that shook the entire state, Accused No.1 got released. Who failed to prove him guilty ??” asked Kamal Haasan in his tweet.

Kausalya has told media that she is going to file an appeal against her father’s release in Supreme court. “Will continue fighting against my father and Shankar’s death, till I get justice” she reportedly said to the media.
