“I think I have said it after the last game he knows what he needs to do, he cannot be told what to do, we believe in MS Dhoni and he’s stood for the team every single time we are very happy with how the batting is going,” Kohli told reporters during the pre-match conference against England.
The innings of Dhoni frustrated many Indian fans and even India’s 2003 world cup captain Sourav Ganguly who was in the commentary box during Dhoni’s batting. As the required rate was so high that Indian team required almost 12 runs an over, Dhoni rotated strike without any intention to hit the ball out of the stadium as he always do.
Dhoni finished with 42 off 31 balls while Jadhav remained unbeaten on 12(13). Commentators Sourav Ganguly and Nasser Hussain who were on air during the last phase of the innings were baffled by the duo’s appraoach of being satisfied with singles and not going for the big shots.
“I don’t have any explanation for that single” said Ganguly when Dhoni sliced the ball for a single. Nasser Hussain, former England captain addressed the moment when fans of Indian team leaving the stadium with disappointment. He even insisted Dhoni to “Give it a go” as it was watched by millions of fans from all over the world. “It’s a World Cup game, top two sides, give it a go! Indian fans would want their side to do a little bit more. They want their side to go down with a fight. Risk it to win it,” he added.

This innings caused debates in social media platforms where some of the Pakistani fans slammed the cricketer and accused him by saying that he did it intentionally to make Pakistan to get knocked out from the tournament. Kollywood Director Vignesh Shivan, who is an ardent fan of Dhoni believed it which is evident through one of his Instagram stories.
The photo meme he posted said that Dhoni took revenge against Pakistan for the way they lost to Australia in Champions Trophy 2009 which made India to get out of the tournament. In that match Pakistan set the target of only 206 to Australia which was chased by them with 2 wickets remaining.

“I think MS was trying really hard to get the boundary but it wasn’t coming off. They bowled in good areas and the ball was stopping, hence it was difficult to bat towards the end,” said Kohli after the game.
Dhoni scored four boundaries in his innings before hitting India’s only six in the penultimate over. But with the asking rate shooting to 15, the Indian duo opted for singles and doubles instead of playing big shots as Virat Kohli’s side slipped to a 31-run defeat.
