MS Dhoni’s blazing unbeaten 44-ball 79 nearly took Chennai Super Kings over the line against Kings XI Punjab but his team fell short by just four runs at Mohali on Saturday.
With 67 needed from the last four overs, the 197-run target set by Punjab looked improbable but being the master of chases, the 36-year-old was at his trademark best.
He was also aided by some wayward bowling from Punjab. Dhoni also struggled with a bad back but was still middling the ball over the ropes, taking 19 from the 18th and the penultimate over. Alas, he fell narrowly short.
One of the greatest finishers in limited-overs cricket, MS Dhoni almost pulled off an improbable run chase once again as Chennai Super Kings lost a super close game against Kings XI Punjab by 4 runs in the Indian Premier League on Sunday night.
While everyone was in awe of MS Dhoni who almost took the game away, KXIP’s captain and a former CSK teammate Ravichandran Ashwin draw flak on Twitter for not mentioning his opponents batting efforts in his post-match comments. “I felt there was a lot of dew, but overall the bowling went well. It was crucial to get Rayudu at that point of the game, it was a game-breaking moment. We are not going to be a team that goes back and thinks maybe we could have done this or that, we are going to be a team that thinks maybe we could have stuck to the basics. Today I thought we should unleash Gayle and he had the right sort of an attack to go out there and express himself,” said Ashwin after his team’s narrow four-run victory.
Fans might have their own reasons to lash at Ashwin but his wife Prithi Ashwin was definitely a fan of the Dhoni innings against KXIP. “What a knock from MS. Catching the highlights in peace after all the nerves,” Prithi tweeted with a screenshot of the match being played in the last over.

Dhoni has had a long-standing issue with his back and was even struggling to run at his normal pace between the wickets during his knock but he says the situation is not so bad at the moment.
